Background
Seizure and status epilepticus (SE) patients often present to the Emergency Department in critical condition, with tonic-clonic seizures, altered mental status, and in need of urgent seizure termination. It is incumbent on the emergency physician to quickly stabilize these patients, diagnose the etiology of the acute seizure, and decide which anti-epileptic drug treatment strategies will optimize the chances for early seizure termination and a good patient outcome. Despite the publication of thousands of articles related to adult seizure and SE patients, including the 2004 ACEP clinical policy, few guidelines exist that delineate what is a reasonable treatment protocol for the management of pediatric seizure and SE patients.
Dr. Jagoda will discuss the adult seizure patient ACEP clinical policy with a focus on how this guideline does and does not address the unique needs of practitioners who care for pediatric seizure and SE patients.
Dr. Sloan will present five pediatric seizure and SE patients, all of which address unique issues regarding the ED diagnosis and management of this important neurological emergency.
Lastly, FERNE
is pleased to include Dr. Mikati, a respected expert in the care of pediatric
seizure and SE patients. He will discuss current recommendations regarding
the acute care of these pediatric patients.
