Background
Seizure and status epilepticus (SE) patients often present to the Emergency Department in critical condition, with tonic-clonic seizures, altered mental status, and in need of urgent seizure termination. This symposium will both review the 2004 ACEP clinical policy on the management of patients with seizures and SE, and it will discuss many important clinical facts that are not explicitly addressed by the policy.
Dr. Huff will review the ACEP adult seizure clinical policy and provide insights as to what the emergency physician might also wish to know that was not necessarily provided in the clinical, such as when certain therapies should be used as opposed to others.
Dr. Jagoda will provide a look at seizure and SE therapies that are available or might become available for use in the ED in the near future. The second generation anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) will be included in this presentation, given their role in the outpatient management of adult seizure and SE patients.
The last presentation by Dr. Sloan will utilize a rapid fire format, allowing our panel of experts and the audience to sound of about how they prefer to treat adult seizure and SE patients in the emergency setting.
